Abstract | The microstructure of several solid systems made of elements displaying a very limited mutual solid solubility at the thermodynamic equilibrium, submitted to high energy ball milling for different times was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The systems were Cu-Fe, Cu-Ag, Ag-Fe, and Ag-Co. TEM observations were based on the combined use of microdiffraction and X-ray microanalysis to detect both elements in a single phase grain. The formation of solid solution Cu(Fe) was observed only for the Cu-Fe sample, which locally showed the presence of contrast fluctuations with spinodal decomposition of the metastable solid solution. |
